The European Waste Reduction Week, taking place on 21—29 November is to raise awareness about waste prevention in Europe. This year the EWRW focuses on invisible waste, which refers to the large amount of waste generated during the manufacturing process of products.
The best way to reduce electrical waste and CO2 emissions caused by electrical devices is to extend the lifecycle of devices. Different governments around the world have been working with several initiatives to address this issue.
Starting from next year the companies within the European Union will start adopting Right To Repair standards to make devices last longer and supply spare parts up to 10 years. France will also label phones and other electrical devices with the repairability scores to encourage consumers to make more environmentally friendly purchases.
One of the reasons for the new legislation is that consumers have been frustrated with the short lifetime of the devices. Devices often break right after the warranty period. Consumers have also been frustrated because there is not always an easy or affordable way to get devices fixed. This tends to result in situations where a consumer chooses to buy a new device instead of having their old one fixed. Many of the consumers would also like to make sustainable choices but haven’t always had possibilities to do so.
Now the change has started. Within the last years, an increasing number of companies have emerged to focus on refurbishing and selling used mobile devices. There are also more repair companies targeting out-of-warranty repairs, such as mobile device screen repairs.
Our mission at Piceasoft is to extend the lifecycle of mobile devices to create more value for businesses, people, and the planet. By extending the life span of products, the need for new production and the amount of waste produced during manufacturing can be reduced. We contribute to waste reduction by enabling sales of used mobile devices and providing software tools for phone reuse, recycling, and care return avoidance.
Piceasoft provides omnichannel software solutions for its customers to benefit from building circular economy thinking into their business plans. Point-of-Sales or front-end care centers can diagnose issues with mobile devices using PiceaServices and avoid unnecessary returns to repair centers saving logistic costs. PiceaServices Mobile and Online API can be utilized to serve consumers online and create even more sustainable digital user journeys.
The old mobile device can be exchanged to a new one and recycled. With PiceaServices Trade-In and PiceaServices Volume, recyclers and trade-in vendors can reuse and resell the old devices back to the second-hand market. PiceaServices solutions can be used to identify potential issues with the device. Once the issues are fixed, the used devices can be resold at a greater price. Ability to identify device issues helps to also save time and reduce related costs. When the mobile device reaches the end of the lifecycle, it can be analysed and securely erased, and some components can be reused for example as spare parts.
Now is a good time to think about ways to participate in the initiatives. The easiest way to contribute is to check your drawers and resell or recycle all the unused electronics. Together we can extend the lifecycle of devices and reduce electronic waste.
