Piceasoft’s mission is to extend the mobile device lifecycle to create more value for businesses, people, and the planet.
Producing one new smartphone causes up to 86kg of additional waste and up to 75kg of CO2 emissions. One of the best ways to reduce waste and CO2 emissions is to extend device lifecycles. Piceasoft’s platform is supporting device reuse, repair, recycling, and insurance use cases to help extend the lifespan of devices.
As a circular economy company, it is important to drive environmental targets in internal operations. Piceasoft has several initiatives to drive a more sustainable office and working life.
Aiming towards a fossil-free office
Piceasoft’s office is in a historic building, which was built as a Finlayson textile factory 130 years ago. The renovation of the Finlayson factory area is a good example of how to save environmental resources. It is better to renovate and reuse buildings rather than dismantle and build new ones.
Piceasoft selected the office because property owner Varma is known for its approach to sustainability. Varma’s climate goals are to be fossil-free in its properties for electricity by 2025 and for heating by 2030 respectively. To reach these targets, Varma has adopted tough measures and announced that it will cut the emissions of its housing portfolio in half by 2023. Varma has created circular economy guidelines to help its tenants to reduce emissions and waste.
Piceasoft’s office building uses renewable energy for heating and cooling. Offices in the Finlayson area utilize an energy-efficient and environmentally friendly local cooling, where cooling energy from the deep water of Lake Näsijärvi is spread through pipelines to properties. Piceasoft’s office building uses wind-certified electricity.
Finlayson area buildings are certified by BREEAM environmental classification. The BREEAM examines, for example, the energy efficiency of buildings and construction projects, waste sorting and recycling opportunities, and whether the site location is along good public transport routes and how cycling is supported in space solutions.
To support biodiversity Varma has added plenty of urban green as part of the Factory Garden project in the Finlayson area with over 160 plant species and activities to support insect diversity.
Minimizing emissions from commuting
Piceasoft supports hybrid working for its employees. Most people are working from home, which reduces the need for commuting. When the current Piceasoft office location was selected, the commuting distance was one of the key selection criteria. Due to the central location of the office, many Piceasoft employees are cycling or walking to the office.
Piceasoft is also offering local transportation benefits for its employees. This means that employees get free tickets for local transportation, which they can use on local buses, trams, and trains according to their preference.
Reusing and recycling office equipment
The need for any internal purchase at Piceasoft is carefully considered when purchasing new material or pieces of equipment. To support the circular economy, the company purchases pre-owned devices and furniture. The amount of paper is minimized whenever possible by using e-signing and other methods to reduce the need for printing. There are also clearly labelled and easy-to-find recycling bins at the office for all types of waste.
Piceasoft is partnering with 3stepIT to lease all IT equipment. 3stepIT is a Finnish company offering a circular economy solution for customers to lease all IT equipment. 3stepIT´s technology lifecycle model consisting of steps for acquisition, lifecycle management and end-of-lease disposal for IT equipment, enables businesses to reduce their Total Cost of Ownership, streamline their IT operations, and meet their own sustainability goals. 3stepIT also enables a new life for up to 98% of the IT equipment returning to the company, thus contributing towards a carbon-neutral future and zero e-waste objective.
Piceasoft is also partnering with Foxway Recommerce to purchase the used phones and tablets for product testing purposes and employees’ use. Foxway partners with businesses globally to deliver supply chain and buyback solutions, allowing businesses to easily achieve compliance, access the value of their returned or waste electronics, and outsource supply chain management and logistics.
These are just a few examples of what individual companies can do to support environmental sustainability. We need to continuously find new ways and cooperate with other companies to protect the planet.
